Frequently asked questions

Can I metal detect on my own on public land?

The easy answer to this is no...

Every piece of land in the uk is owned by someone so unless your on a beach that permits metal detecting... you will need permission from the landowner.

What is metal detecting?

Metal detecting is the hobby of using a metal detector to search for and discover metal items hidden underground.

Do I need a license to metal detect?

In the UK, you don't need a license for metal detecting, but you should always seek permission from landowners and follow the Treasure Act.

Please note that to attend our digs, you will need NCMD insurance.

This is very cheap and it covers you fully should the worst happen.

Just bring your ncmd card on the day.

What type of metal detector should I buy?

The choice of a metal detector depends totally on you and what type of land you will be searching.

Beach, fields and parks are all big factors when choosing your first machine.

How much does it cost to attend detect it nation events?

The prices vary between £10 & £20 for single day digs.

What if there is an accident onsite whilst detecting?

All of our admin team are first aid trained and we carry a full range of life saving equipment including an up to date, fully working defibrillator.

How long do the day events last?

The day events typically run between 8.30am and 4.30pm in the summer.

In winter months they can be between 9.15am and 4.15pm due to lighting conditions.

What is a pre paid event? I cant find any?

A pre paid event will only be displayed if we have one active.

Pre paid events are things such as weekenders or special 2 day events.

If you cant see one, dont worry... you can still access our one day events that are visible on our facebook page within the events section there.

Simply mark going to be added to the going list.

What do i need to attend and metal detect at the digs?

For all members that are actually metal detecting - whilst attending our digs you will need at the very least the following equipment ontop of the basic kit...

*A finds pouch

*NCMD insurance or alternative cover

If you turn up without a finds pouch, you wont be able to attend the dig as all trash and unwanted items should be taken away and not discarded in the fields.

  • Anyone caught reburying trash or leaving unsuitable holes will be banned from the group and any others that we admin.

Can children attend?

Yes, under 16s can attend our digs free of charge as long as they are under the supervision of an adult at all times.

What classes as treasure?

The UK Treasure act (2023)

The Treasure (Designation) (Amendment) Order 2023 extended the definition of treasure in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The order came into force on July 30, 2023.

What does the amendment do?

    • Adds a new class of objects to the definition of treasure
    • Excludes two classes of objects from the definition of treasure

  • Includes objects that are significant finds

What is considered treasure?

  • Any metallic object (not coins) that is at least 200 years old when found
  • Any object that provides an exceptional insight into national or regional history, archaeology, or culture
  • Any object that is part of the same find as one or more other objects that provides such an insight

What happens when treasure is found?

  • The finder must notify the local coroner within 14 days
  • The coroner has the power to hold an inquest to decide whether the object is treasure
